Radio friendly, commercial song writing
Pop songs today need to be radio friendly yet intriguing; mainstream yet quirky; following current trends yet setting new ones. These conflicting needs make the music industry the most challenging to work in the arts arena.
Since the 1960’s, the short form popular song has 3 minutes or so to introduce itself, explain what it wants to say, and lead up to a climax which satisfies the listener. Plus it must have hooks and licks that helps people remember it and want to hear it again.
A great contemporary pop song must also be open to interpretation by media producers so they can visualise the music for that all important video.
